Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes inflammation, intense itching, dryness, and irritation. It can develop at any age, though it is most common in childhood and can persist into adulthood. While eczema has no permanent cure, effective treatment strategies can help manage flare-ups and maintain healthier skin.

At Metropolis Dermatology in Costa Mesa, CA, we offer personalized eczema treatments to help reduce symptoms, strengthen the skin barrier, and improve overall skin health.

What is Eczema?

Eczema results from a combination of genetic, immune system, and environmental factors. Individuals with eczema often have a weakened skin barrier, making it harder to retain moisture and protect against irritants.

Eczema can develop anywhere on the body, but it most often appears in areas where the skin bends or flexes. The location of eczema may shift depending on age:

  • Infants and Young Children: Eczema frequently shows up on the cheeks, outer elbows, and knees. It can also affect the face, scalp, arms, and legs.
  • Older Children and Adults: Eczema is commonly found on the hands, feet, arms, and behind the knees. It may also appear on the neck, ankles, and even the lips.

Causes

  • Allergens: Dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mold can cause irritation.
  • Irritants: Harsh soaps, detergents, fragrances, and rough fabrics can aggravate symptoms.
  • Climate & Weather: Cold, dry air or excessive heat and humidity can worsen symptoms.
  • Stress: Emotional stress can weaken the immune system, triggering breakouts.
  • Genetics: Those with a family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies are more prone to the condition.

Symptoms

Eczema symptoms vary in severity and location, but common signs include:

  • Persistent Itching: Often severe, leading to excessive scratching that worsens inflammation.
  • Redness & Swelling: Affected areas appear inflamed, swollen, and irritated.
  • Dry, Scaly Patches: Skin may become rough, flaky, and prone to cracking.
  • Oozing or Cracking: In severe cases, skin may develop open sores, crusting, or infections.

Treatment Options for Eczema

While eczema cannot be cured, advanced treatments can effectively control symptoms and prevent flare-ups. At Metropolis Dermatology in Costa Mesa, we develop customized treatment plans based on individual skin needs.

Common Eczema Treatment Approaches

  • Medical-Grade Skincare: Strengthen and hydrate your skin with dermatologist-recommended products designed to calm irritation and support your skin barrier.
  • Topical & Oral Medications: Prescription creams, ointments, and oral medications help reduce inflammation, control itching, and prevent flare-ups.
  • Phototherapy (Excimer Laser): Targeted narrowband UVB light therapy can reduce inflammation and improve eczema symptoms with minimal side effects. The Excimer Laser is especially effective for localized eczema that hasn’t responded to topical treatments.
  • Cortisone Shots: For severe flare-ups, corticosteroid injections provide rapid relief by reducing swelling, redness, and itching. This treatment is ideal for stubborn or widespread eczema that needs immediate intervention.
  • Lifestyle & Allergen Management: Identifying triggers like stress, allergens, and environmental factors can help prevent and minimize eczema outbreaks.

The right combination of topical treatments, skincare routines, and lifestyle adjustments can help effectively manage eczema and prevent frequent flare-ups.

I have been going to Metropolis Dermatology for about two years now, and it has been, and continues to be, a wonderful experience. The staff are always friendly, thorough, and welcoming. They make everything run so smoothly, and I appreciate how prompt they are in answering any questions I have. But the star of the show is Dr. Shauna Higgins! I could spend all day writing about what an incredible physician she is. She is the kind of doctor people wish for. She’s incredibly caring, so attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. At every appointment with her, I walk out feeling seen and heard, and I always leave with a smile on my face. Prior to coming to her, I was struggling with my skin in many ways, but she has completely fixed all of those issues! If I could have her as all of my doctors, I absolutely would.

They have snacks, tea, coffee , and water for you. The staff is very nice and pleasant. One staff suggested a nice restaurant and bakery . Dr. Higgins is excellent and has great communication skills. I asked a few questions and she gladly answered. Some doctors are short and blunt and you don't feel comfortable asking questions. I'm glad Metropolis is not that type of medical facility . The staff are courteous, the place is clean and they have snacks!
