Meet The founder

Dr. James Y. Wang is a double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist. He grew up in upstate New York and attended college at Washington University in St. Louis. He earned an MD degree from Harvard Medical School and, concurrently, his MBA in management and healthcare policy from Harvard Business School. He then completed his medical training at UCLA and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

After completing his fellowship in New York, Dr. Wang returned to the Los Angeles area to practice dermatology. He ultimately fell in love with the energy and growth of downtown – excited that it was a place to both work and live. There was palpable diversity, creativity, and artistic expression. This is where he opened his first practice in April 2019 – on the 10th floor of a beautiful office building at the intersection of L.A. Live, the Financial District, and South Park residential district.

With the opening of the flagship location in DTLA, patients have come far and wide for the specialized and superb care. Many patients have asked Metropolis to expand beyond DTLA and to offer its unique culture and vibe to other areas of Los Angeles. Hence, Metropolis Dermatology – Brentwood opened in February 2022.

Dr. Wang is confident that patients will continue to recognize the importance of the highest quality of care, not only measured in the training of its excellent providers, but also in the entire experience ranging from friendly staff to the use of the most advanced technologies.    I have been going to Metropolis Dermatology for about two years now, and it has been, and continues to be, a wonderful experience. The staff are always friendly, thorough, and welcoming. They make everything run so smoothly, and I appreciate how prompt they are in answering any questions I have. But the star of the show is Dr. Shauna Higgins! I could spend all day writing about what an incredible physician she is. She is the kind of doctor people wish for. She’s incredibly caring, so attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. At every appointment with her, I walk out feeling seen and heard, and I always leave with a smile on my face. Prior to coming to her, I was struggling with my skin in many ways, but she has completely fixed all of those issues! If I could have her as all of my doctors, I absolutely would.

   They have snacks, tea, coffee , and  water for you. The staff is very nice and pleasant.  One staff suggested a nice restaurant and bakery . Dr. Higgins  is excellent and has great communication skills. I asked  a few questions and she gladly answered. Some doctors are short and blunt and you don't feel comfortable asking questions.  I'm glad Metropolis is not that type of medical facility . The staff are courteous,  the place is clean and they have snacks!

   I have been seeing Dr. Higgins for years now to address issues like recurrent hormonal acne, aggressive dark spots, and other issues, and she has been the best derm that I have ever been to - and I have been to several over the years. Since our first meeting, she immediately diagnosed all of my issues and provided me with a very clear plan of action that would actively treat all of the issues I mentioned to her, while also still taking into consideration how sensitive my skin is and how the slightest change can cause an adverse reaction that could take months to resolve. And she immediately knew the right mix of medications to address each issue without doing more damage to my already fragile skin. As a black woman, it's really hard to find a doctor that really knows how to address diverse skin and their various issues. Also, she was so communicative following my appointment -- any questions I had, she always made sure to respond via message or whenever I called the office. I couldn't be happier to find someone that I feel very confident really knows what they are doing, and are not just prescribing harsh, aggressive medications that do more harm than good.
