Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps, typically affecting the face. While there is no cure, effective treatment options can significantly reduce symptoms and improve skin appearance.

At Metropolis Dermatology in San Jose, our team offers customized treatment plans to help manage rosacea and bring relief to those suffering from its effects.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes redness, primarily on the face, and can worsen over time if left untreated. It tends to flare up in cycles, where symptoms may appear for weeks or months and then subside temporarily. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it’s thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Causes

While the underlying cause of rosacea remains unclear, several triggers are known to exacerbate symptoms:

  • Genetics. Individuals with a family history of rosacea are more likely to develop the condition.
  • Environmental factors. Sun exposure, hot weather, and wind can all trigger flare-ups.
  • Diet. Spicy foods, alcohol, and hot drinks may intensify symptoms.
  • Stress and emotions. Flushing often occurs in response to emotional stress or anxiety.

Symptoms

The symptoms of rosacea vary from person to person but typically include:

  • Persistent facial redness. Primarily on the cheeks, forehead, and nose.
  • Visible blood vessels. Dilated capillaries under the skin that are visible to the naked eye.
  • Bumps and pimples. Resembling acne, but without blackheads.
  • Skin sensitivity. Burning, itching, or stinging sensations on affected areas.

Treatment Options

At Metropolis Dermatology, we offer several effective treatment options for managing rosacea, including topical treatments, oral medications, and laser therapy.

Advantages

  • Customizable. Treatments can be tailored to address specific symptoms, such as redness or pimples.
  • Anti-inflammatory. Topical treatments help reduce inflammation and calm the skin.
  • Antibiotics. Oral antibiotics can reduce rosacea-related bumps and pustules.
  • Prevents worsening. Regular use of prescribed treatments can help prevent flare-ups.
  • Minimal side effects. Both topical and oral treatments are generally well-tolerated with few side effects.
  • Laser Treatment. Some patients benefit from a combination of medications and laser treatments to improve results. Lasers can be a safe way to treat rosacea without a daily routine of medications. Once improved, maintenance can be as few as twice per year. Our advanced DermaV laser is primed to treat even the most stubborn rosacea cases.
  • Long-term management. Consistent use of these treatments can keep rosacea symptoms under control for extended periods.

I have been going to Metropolis Dermatology for about two years now, and it has been, and continues to be, a wonderful experience. The staff are always friendly, thorough, and welcoming. They make everything run so smoothly, and I appreciate how prompt they are in answering any questions I have. But the star of the show is Dr. Shauna Higgins! I could spend all day writing about what an incredible physician she is. She is the kind of doctor people wish for. She’s incredibly caring, so attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. At every appointment with her, I walk out feeling seen and heard, and I always leave with a smile on my face. Prior to coming to her, I was struggling with my skin in many ways, but she has completely fixed all of those issues! If I could have her as all of my doctors, I absolutely would.

They have snacks, tea, coffee , and water for you. The staff is very nice and pleasant. One staff suggested a nice restaurant and bakery . Dr. Higgins is excellent and has great communication skills. I asked a few questions and she gladly answered. Some doctors are short and blunt and you don't feel comfortable asking questions. I'm glad Metropolis is not that type of medical facility . The staff are courteous, the place is clean and they have snacks!
